BAKER, San Bernardino County — October 24, 2026. The Baker Boulevard bridge over the Mojave River channel is the subject of a major county replacement project. In a September 24, 2025 announcement, San Bernardino County Public Works reported securing $18,369,000 in state Transportation Corridors Enhancement Program funding to help replace the aging bridge and improve nearby portions of Baker Boulevard. That announcement sets out the plan, but does not certify how far construction had advanced by late October 2026.

What is being replaced?

The county describes the existing structure as a two-lane, 408-foot-long timber bridge built in the 1930s. Its proposed replacement is a four-lane concrete bridge with a center median, shoulders and improved connections to adjoining pavement. The scope also describes sidewalks, driveway adjustments and pedestrian accessibility features on approximately 0.32 miles of the boulevard west of State Route 127, known locally as Death Valley Road.

Where the funding comes from

The $18.369 million state grant does not automatically represent the entire project budget. The county says the work also involves Surface Transportation Program local allocations and Measure I North Desert funding. That distinction matters when considering future cost changes and which public agency is responsible for additional expenses.

What is known about timing?

The original Public Works announcement forecast construction beginning in June 2026 and finishing in June 2028. These are dates from a 2025 forecast; California58 has not verified a groundbreaking date, final completion schedule, lane closure, contractor notice to proceed, or updated budget as of October 24. Residents and businesses should verify current activity through San Bernardino County Public Works project updates rather than mistake a published forecast for a real-time traffic announcement.

Why it matters to Baker

Baker Boulevard serves local businesses, neighborhoods and visitors travelling on Interstate 15 and toward State Route 127. A replacement that changes driving patterns or access to shops can have consequences long before completion. Residents can ask Public Works for construction phasing, a pedestrian access plan, anticipated detours and steps taken to notify affected properties. Reports of a specific closure require current agency confirmation.
